Story 11 – A mysterious illness
Câu chuyện số 11 – Bệnh Vô Hình by ThầyGià on 12 November 2008, translated by NgocXuan, edited by Horangi. Updated 3/18/2024
Dr. Quang, a doctor who remained employed by the new Vietnamese government after the 1975 change, was highly regarded within the provincial hospital for his expertise and experience. Around 1980, while practicing Old_Guru Secret Teaching, I (referred to as Old_Guru) gained recognition after conducting several exorcisms. Dr. Quang had received teachings from me and possessed a basic understanding of mysticism.
An intriguing tale involving Dr. Quang unfolded as follows:
An elderly woman suffered from severe headaches despite receiving treatment from various doctors at the hospital. She happened to be the mother-in-law of Mr. Sau, the police chief of the provincial committee of the Party, who entrusted her care to the hospital.
Dr. Quang, who worked at the hospital during the day, also saw patients at his home in the evenings to supplement his income. Despite the elderly woman’s communist background and the illicit nature of his private practice, her family faithfully brought her to Dr. Quang’s residence every evening for treatment. Dr. Quang, initially hesitant due to her political connections, eventually treated her with injections of ordinary vitamins, which surprisingly provided temporary relief from her headaches.
Despite his doubts about the effectiveness of his treatments, Dr. Quang became increasingly suspicious that the woman’s illness might be attributed to spiritual causes.
During that period, Dr. Quang and I often conversed over coffee and cigarettes. One day, he proposed that I visit the elderly lady, a suggestion I welcomed given my interest in spirituality and metaphysics.
A few days later, Dr. Quang chauffeured me on his Vespa to the woman’s house in the suburban outskirts, roughly 5 to 6 kilometers away. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the elderly woman and two others, likely the wife and sister-in-law of the provincial committee’s police chief. After exchanging pleasantries, we were offered drinks at the reception table situated in front of the family’s Buddhist altar.
Dispensing with formalities, I promptly commenced the spiritual work. Standing before the Buddha statue, I formed the Cundi mudra—an invocation hand gesture—and recited the set of Five Mantras (Um lam, Um xi lam…) seven times. I then instructed the elderly woman to join her palms together in prayer as I addressed the spirit responsible for her ailment. I requested the spirit to reveal its origin for the family’s understanding, outlining specific hand movements corresponding to different realms: bowing three times at chest level for the Lower Realm, at face level for the Intermediate Realm, and above the head for the Superior Realm.
The elderly lady’s hands began to shake vigorously, moving in sinuous motions above her head before she bowed three times, much to the astonishment of her family.
I then requested a small glass of water and, after reciting the Buddha’s name three times, offered it to her to drink. I confirmed that the spirit involved was a ‘fairy’ from the Superior Realm, with a predetermined connection to the elderly woman. The fairy had come to aid her in both her earthly and spiritual journeys.
With that, Dr. Quang and I bid farewell and departed together.
About a month later, close to the New Year celebration, I returned home to find my family informing me that Mr. Sau, the police chief, and his driver had delivered a pair of chickens as a token of gratitude from his mother-in-law, who had been relieved of her chronic headaches. Until then, Mr. Sau and I had only known of each other’s existence but had never met in person.
Until next time…
