Story 3 – Dada performing exorcism

Dada’s elder, a monk from a Cambodian monastery in the west of South Vietnam, shared with one of Old_Guru’s disciples an intriguing story. It was about an exorcism Chimdada conducted for a general’s son from Thailand. This event attracted significant attention, drawing a crowd, including Thai policemen, to witness Dada pour a basket of seemingly boiling water over the possessed person, effectively liberating him from the evil spirit.

When Old Guru met Dada, he inquired about the specifics of the story. Dada clarified that the water he used was, in fact, not hot and that the possessed individual was indeed the son of a Cambodian general residing in Thailand.

Based on this tale, Old Guru will outline the fundamental principles of exorcism:

1. The exorcist must possess an ‘Official Seal’ (or license) from Saints or Deities and be well-versed in mysticism. The methods of exorcism vary among different mystical schools, sects, or faiths. For instance, some shamans might use a rattan rod to whip the air while chanting mantras. Others might employ ritual hand gestures (Mudras) to combat spirits from afar, or use foliage dipped in water to sprinkle over the afflicted individual. These techniques aim to compel the evil spirit to scream, plead for mercy, and ultimately depart. It is, however, strictly prohibited to physically assault the possessed individual as a means to expel the demon.

2. Exorcism should not be attempted by those not proficient in the esoteric arts. Utilizing images of Buddha, Jesus Christ, mantras, yantras, or any magical spells to suppress evil spirits can provoke them to retaliate, leading to public embarrassment for the exorcist.

3. It’s essential to discern whether the spirit is a Saint, Deity, or an entity from a lower realm. If it’s the soul of a deceased, inquire if there are any unresolved issues between the spirit and the family of the possessed. Determine what the spirit desires.

4. Do not assume that anyone skilled in magic or held in high regard within their faith or religion automatically knows how to perform an exorcism. This includes so-called professional exorcists, who may only have partial knowledge.

Some factual examples include:

__ In an incident at his temple, the spiritual teacher known as Mr. Cold Water was forcefully struck in the face by someone possessed. Angered, he and two of his disciples overpowered the afflicted woman, holding her down and subjecting her to a severe beating. It was their anger, not the pursuit of exorcism, that drove them to assault the woman’s body instead of addressing the evil spirit.

__ Another monk, renowned for his exorcism success, was very proud of himself, thinking of himself as a virtuous man, by being a strict vegetarian and eating only once a day at noon time. His disciples considered him a living Buddha. Once during an exorcism, the possessed, a young girl, suddenly jumped into his lap. He lost his temper and gave her a few slaps across her cheeks (I guess the spirit must be having a good laugh at the monk: How come the “Living Buddha” be so afraid of sexual temptation and of losing his reputation that he would beat someone so brutally).

__ An elderly monk, not adept in exorcism, presided over a temple in the province. Inspired by the reputed power of the Lankavatara Sutra to subdue even heavenly spirits, he decided to try a novel approach. He placed a wooden piece on the head of the person afflicted by a spirit, while reciting the sutra and striking the piece with a mallet. During the ritual in front of the main sanctuary, the possessed individual cast the wooden piêc to the floor and chastised him, “What moral merit do you have that justifies placing this piêc on my head?” So shameful was the event that it unfolded in the presence of approximately 30 disciples, who witnessed the aftermath following an evening prayer session.

__ A few years ago, Pope John Paul II performed an exorcism on a Catholic girl. This occurred after the Catholic Church had announced the formation of a committee to revise exorcism rituals. During the exorcism, the Pope called upon the name of God, commanding the spirit to exit the girl’s body. The evil entity mocked the Pope, stating, “Not even your church’s leader can drive me away.” (source: http://www.angelfire.com/ky/dodone/EXO.html )

__ Numerous articles have been published about exorcists from various faiths who, driven by anger and ignorance, inadvertently caused the death of the possessed individuals, resulting in their incarceration.

In summary, possessing authority, whether in the tangible or spiritual realm, is crucial for addressing cases that intersect with the laws of the physical world and the metaphysical.

Pope performs exorcism on raging teen-age girl
By JOHN NORTON, Catholic News Service (from THE RECORD. Louisville, KY)

Pope John Paul II performed an impromptu exorcism on a teen-age girl who flew into a possessed rage at the end of an audience in St. Peter’s Square, said the chief exorcist for the Diocese of Rome.
Rome’s exorcist, Pauline Father Gabriele Amorth, said Sept. 11 that the pope spent more than half an hour praying over the girl and ordering a demon to leave her, but failed to fully cure her.
The girl, identified as a 19 year-old Italian with a history of possession, was in the front row at the pope’s weekly general audience Sept. 6. As the pope prepared to leave, she began screaming incomprehensibly and speaking in a “cavernous voice,” Father Amorth said.
As security personnel struggled to restrain her “superhuman” efforts to break free, Bishop Gianni Danzi, a top Vatican City official, alerted the pope.
In an area away from the square, the pope hugged this poor little girl, tried to console her, and promised that the next day, Thursday morning, he would celebrate his Mass for her,” Father Amorth said.
Father Amorth was not present at the papal exorcism, but said he had performed an exorcism on the girl the previous day. Father Amorth said that after the girl met with the pope, Bishop Danzi and he performed another exorcism that lasted for two hours.

During that exorcism, the priest said, the demon mocked the pope, saying, “Not even your (church) head can send me away.”

“This is a case where the possession is very, very strong,” said Father Amorth, founder and president of the International Association of Exorcists.
“From what can be foreseen by us exorcists, it will take years of exorcisms” for the girl to be fully cured, he said.

The pope did not perform a full ritual exorcism, but Father Amorth said that ritual elements make only “the slightest difference” to an exorcism’s effectiveness. “Many, many exorcists don’t do the ritual exorcism, but limit themselves to praying and to ordering the demon to go,” he said.

Father Amorth said the girl has been possessed since she was 12 years old and was sent to him for consultation by the exorcist of the Archdiocese of Milan, who had never dealt with such a severe case.

Bishop Danzi was unavailable to comment, his secretary told Catholic News Service. The Vatican’s press office also declined comment.
Pope John Paul reportedly has carried out at least two other exorcisms in the Vatican: one in 1978 and one in 1982
